David - nice story. I like this as a change of pace - you should definitely write more using astronomy as a backdrop :-) my only critique, a small one, is the repetition of the phrase "small bites"

Love it how you compare knowledge to eating something really good and worthy of being savored. Very well-written and thoughtful.

CD

Nice. I liked this a lot. I particularly enjoyed the ending scene, where he is set up in the park and lets passersby have a look. Brings back fond memories of the group we stumbled upon out in Balboa Park in San Diego a couple of years ago. There were a bunch of people with with telescopes set up. I'm pretty sure when looking through one of them the guy said, "It's Saturn." Quite a connection for me. :)

Also, I like that this story did not depend on a "twist". Nothing wrong with twists, but they really are not required for a piece of flash fiction to work. A good story is a good story. Period.
~jon

Great story! All knowledge should be acquired a bite at a time. In some the thirst will grow while in others it won't.

I've been meaning to write some astronomy stories since it's a subject I'm intimately familiar with. Astronomy does sneak into many of my stories, though. May your astronomy studies inspire new ideas.

Thanks. I updated the post by striking "my" leaving the evidence. I rewrote this from first person and made a few other changes. The original is my first post on this blog: http://www.dracotorre.com/blog/2009/01/its-saturn/

Astrophysics is my lifelong interest. I used my telescope experiences to describe the views. The schoolyard was a childhood thought-experiment.

Beautiful story of wonder guiding learning here. Oh, and good overview of relativity, too.

Who doesn't love discovering the planets and the universe? Loved this tale.

You wrote: "Problems twirled through Bobby’s head as he worked them out on my own." - "My own", I'm guessing that, in a sense, that's not really a typo.

This sentence is great: "Bobby questioned everything, taking small bites." Little brother outgrows big brother in knowledge. I liked how his mind grew in the schoolyard.
