Yes. Hardware like the iPhone and Android have the software advantage. Once multi-function devices (Courier/iTablet?) replace laptops as the norm in portable computing, the dedicated readers will disappear. Or become extremely cheap.

I agree with your theory. I see e-readers taking news, magazine articles along with much of mass market paperback. Whatever new storytelling experiences emerge will likely continue complimenting traditional books.

Thanks for the input.

Ebooks fascinate me. I think one of the big issues with the concept of dedicated readers is the difference in development speed and cost when compared with software equivalents, like the Stanza reader for iPhone, or Fbook for the Android platform.

Hardware slows down the product cycle, adds costs, and complicates entering international markets (eg - Kindle needing to negotiate with carriers & regulatory bodies to enter other countries).

My theory is that the Ebook market, however it is read, will develop a complementary relationship with traditional print. Novels in print at the the beach & cabin, and short stories, essays and articles on E-readers during the commute and at lunch hours.
